IT all started on Facebook almost a year ago when Aleksandre (Alex) Beridze contacted Buccaneers chairman Dorian Roach about visiting the Bahamas.
Nine months later Alex landed in Nassau after a 17-hour journey from the Republic of Georgia, and was picked up by Buccaneer players Hayden Smiler and John Conmee. Alex was hosted by several players during his two-week visit and was able to attend several practices.
During his recent visit, Beridze was able to experience some of the Bahamas, including travelling to Bimini and spending a day on Rose Island. Of course, Beridze also got to experience Bahamian rugby practices and share his experiences playing for the Republic of Georgia. “When I arrived to play with the Buccaneers, I had not heard much about Bahamas Rugby, but after my first practice I saw a lot of strong and potential players, who can play not only for the national team, but they can play in strong European rugby leagues,”said Beridze.
“I think if the Bahamian government will assist rugby union members I am sure that in a couple of years Bahamian rugby will rise in the world rankings. I hope they see the potential and progress kids rugby first so that Bahamas rugby will have a future. I want to say thanks a lot to Dorian who assisted me to come to the Bahamas and I hope we can progress Bahamian rugby and make it one of the best rugby countries in the world.”
Alex has played rugby all over the world, including Europe, the US and Canada. He has been playing for 20 years and coaching for 10 years. He hopes to come back to the sea and sun in the near future.
