FOLLOWING a successful year, the Grand Lucayan Resort plans to refurbish and reopen the 200-room Lighthouse Pointe property, expanding its total room inventory to over 700. It is expected to be back in operation by the end of the year.
Ben Davis, general manager, reported that business at the Grand Lucayan has been unexpectedly good over the past year and during the first half of 2015 and felt it would be a good time to reopen Lighthouse Pointe.
“The rooms there have not been in operation for a very, very long time and we though it would be a good thing to open that part of the hotel,” he told The Tribune.
But Mr Davis also warned of the challenges of competition, high cost of travel to Grand Bahama and the need to maintain quality service.
“We need to be very careful how we look after the second half of the year,” he said. “There is a lot of discounting going on in the marketplace and we have a lot of competition from the cruise liners, and we just need to make sure we can sustain the business into Grand Bahama because getting here is not easy.”
He believes that getting to Grand Bahama is too expensive, especially for families. “It is very expensive to get here and that is something we have to look at because for a family of four to get to GB it would cost $1,600 which is totally ridiculous. We need to work at getting that reduced big time. We all have challenges, but we have to be smart and to see how we can make sure we deliver good service, which is the most important thing.” he said.
The Grand Lucaya Resort and the Commonwealth Hotel Workers and Allied Workers Union recognised employees this week for providing good service to guests. In observance of Father’s Day, a special luncheon was held for all fathers. Noel Robinson, a hotel steward, was named Father of the Year. The Union and management are still negotiating a new labour agreement for workers.
