WHILE the spirited Miller’s Construction Knights continue to roll along in perfect fashion, their arch rivals - double defending champions Dozer Heavy Equipment Co Pros - are keeping pace and indications are that the race for Masters Softball Association (MSA) regular season honours may go “right down to the wire”.
Durable Johnny “Carlye “ Armbrister went the distance and blanked lowly Sunryse Schredding Services Giants over four of the seven innings as Joshua chalked up an easy 17-8 victory, their eighth with two games remaining, on Saturday.
Afterwards, Dozer won by default against The Corner Boyz - their sixth victory in seven and fourth straight - to keep on the pace at 6-1. Sammy Adderley was pleased with the win after blowing a sizeable lead against the Knight in a 15-4 loss.
The Pros have three more games - against A-1 Signs/McDonalds Raiders and the Corner Boyz, who appear to have a foothold on the final playoff spot.
In the only contest staged on weekend six, slick fielding Keith “Sir Barnabas” Butler’s top of the third inning three-run blast over the right staked Armbrister to an 11-4 lead and Joshua never looked back.
Butler, three for four on the afternoon, drilled Tim Sawyer’s one–strike delivery and cruised home behind catcher Anthony “Bony” Pinder and centerfielder Jeff Cooper. Pinder batted at the rear of the line up but came through with a key single to score Victor Bain (who reached via an error) which got the frame going and had two hits in five trips.
Miller’s Construction scored at least once each time up and Armbrister blanked Sunryse over the bottom of the first, third and fourth as well as the seventh, en-route to the Giants suffering their ninth set back in as many outings.
Minutes before Butler’s homer, designated player Winston “Daryl Strawberry” Seymour whacked a grand slam homer to highlight their five-run second.
Swinging clean-up Seymour swung a four-for five stick after he doubled home elder Ronald “Big Boy” initially and had five runs batted in. On the other side of the ledger, centrefielder Addington “Bud” Cambridge handled his leadoff spot (going three-for five in a losing cause) and knocked over three runs.
Whereas Cambridge legged out a solo in-the-parker as part of Sunryse’s two –run sixth, shortstop Ian Burgzog and versatile Stephen Bellot both had a pair of safeties, along with one RBI.
MSA executives have decided to play only remaining regular games with a bearing on the playoffs and as a result, the campaign is tipped to wind down like this:
Saturday: A1- Sign/McDonalds v Dozer Pros (2pm)
Sunday: Dozer Pros v Corner Boyz (2pm); BTC v A1-McDonalds (3.30pm)
