HANDS For Hunger, a Bahamian organisation dedicated to eliminate hunger in the country, will hold Food for Thought on Thursday to coincide with this year’s World Hunger Day.
The organisation says the event, an interactive discussion and awareness building forum, will be a unique experience. “This community educational forum aims to encourage the public to discover how simple changes such as eating locally, organically and seasonally produced food, among other best practices, can make a significant impact on a sustainable food future,” organisers said.
The dynamic conversation on the future of food seeks to develop further consciousness about national food security, to analyse local and global farming best practices and to explore solutions towards leading healthy, sustainable lifestyles.
Leading the discussion will be local, regional and international industry professionals, including Sharon Brennen-Haylock, from the Food Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations; Arnold De Mendonca, of the Inter-American Institute for Co-operation on Agriculture; Godfrey Eneas, of the Ministry of Agriculture; and John Hedden, an agronomist consultant.
M’wale Rahming, of Public Domain, will provide commentary and executive chef Simeon Hall Jr will introduce a meal plan that is designed for individuals to source local produce, emphasising that most can afford to eat nutritious, organic foods while remaining conscious of budget.
“Along with our esteemed panel, we will explore best practices to support local agriculture and agri-business. My personal hope is that these discussions contribute to a larger, on-going dialogue on achieving national food security,” said Zeleka Knowles, Executive Director of Hands For Hunger.
“We consider all forms of hunger and food-related issues a cause for our attention and so I encourage the public to learn more by joining the conversation at Food For Thought on Thursday at the Hilton.”
Mrs Knowles thanked RBC Royal Bank for its support of the event for the third consecutive year. “RBC’s involvement as a presenting sponsor for Food For Thought demonstrates their unwavering support to address the ever-growing need for hunger-relief, while helping us secure funding for our food rescue programme, food security research and healthy living education programmes,” she said.
Additional offerings of Food For Thought will include cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a live cooking demonstration, raffles and prizes; and the $10 admission fee includes a chance to win a spectacular door prize with a value of $175.
Food for Thought will be held on Thursday at the British Colonial Hilton, Nassau, from 6pm to 8pm.
