Bahamas Contractor’s Association (BCA) president Leonard Sands said that the organisation was eyeing a “major shift” that would allow the association to evolve into an umbrella organisation and forge deeper ties with all industry stakeholders.
Speaking with Tribune Business yesterday, Mr Sands said: “The future for the BCA is to evolve the organisation into an umbrella organisation that really acts like the Chamber of Commerce for every business related to the construction industry.
“That means that we would like to have deeper and more meaningful relationships with the real-estate association, the architect’s association, the engineers association, developers, building suppliers and everyone who participates in this industry.
He added: “Right now the BCA now is in a small box with basically contractors and subcontractors. What we hope to bring about is an expansion to a holistic body that really deals with the wider industry of construction and not just contractors. That’s a shift, a major shift, and it means much more work in building relationships. When you pull in other stakeholders, and make our mission important to them as well, I think then they can participate in a more meaningful way in order for us to achieve the things that get the industry as a whole to benefit.”
Mr Sands said the the Contractor’s Bill was still high on the BCA’s agenda. “We recognise that all of the things that we may want to do have to be undergirded with legislation that gives the industry legitimacy.
“I think that, right now, the construction industry is in an interesting place but it is capped as opposed to where the growth could be because of the lack of legislation,” he said.
