Wrong priorities

EDITOR, The Tribune.

For those wondering exactly how much of their time our government’s leaders are devoting to the violent crime that is literally endangering the viability of our state, the Prime Minister of Grenada, Keith Mitchell recently gave us some indication.

Addressing the fate of the West Indies Cricket Board last week, Mr Mitchell had this to say: “We gave of our time – the Prime Minister of The Bahamas (Perry Christie), his country plays little or no cricket, but he left his country and came to Grenada, engaged with the West Indies Cricket Board and all stakeholders.”

For Keith Mitchell (a peripatetic man who rarely misses an opportunity to travel, run his mouth or, preferably, both) this was an endorsement. It suggests that our PM took the time to attend to a matter of no interest to the Bahamian public all in the spirit of regional fraternity.

But in a country where most under-50s associate the term “Cricket” exclusively with a nocturnal member of the grasshopper family, it can just as easily be seen as another example of official time-wasting at the public expense.
