Man questioned by police in connection with beating death

POLICE are questioning a 37-year-old man in connection with the death of a man who died in hospital Wednesday, hours after he was beaten with a pipe.

According to police, the victim was outside a home on Sandilands Village Road when a man that he knew struck him with an object. The victim was rushed to hospital in critical condition where he later died. Relatives have identified the man as Yves Smith.

His sister, Yontalay Hanna, remembered her brother as a fun person, who loved “Junkanoo and his kids”.

“He was a person that always wanted to have fun and to make people happy. He was loving and willing to give anything to anyone who needed it,” Ms Hanna said. “He loved pasting costumes and people would come to him to paste their costumes, in fact that is what he was doing when he was attacked, he was dropping off a costume.

“He loved his children, he has a boy and a girl and he loved them and loved spending time with them. This is a big loss.”

Police also reported that they have arrested a suspect in connection with a shooting that occurred in Millers Heights on Tuesday. Officers from the Selective Enforcement Team took an adult male into custody on Wednesday in connection with the shooting incident that occurred at a basketball court shortly after 8pm.

Investigations are continuing.
