Aktion Club of Fort Montagu. - Members of the Aktion Club of Fort Montagu attended the national Training and Leadership Conference in Indianapolis, from June 26-27.
Kiwanis International President John Button was on hand, as well as Katie Griffin, director of Aktion Clubs for Kiwanis International. Workshops were provided at the conference on topics like self-advocacy, health and wellness, and team building.
Every Aktion Club there gave a presentation. For the Aktion Club of Fort Montagu presentation, President James told of the club’s community service, fundraising and donations made during the year. He also highlighted the new disability act for The Bahamas.
Every club received a trophy and all Aktion Club members received medals. President Dr John Buttons presented the awards and medals to the Aktion Club members.
The highlight of the training was watching a movie made by a young man with Down Syndrome by the name of David Desanctis, who plays the role of Produce in the movie “Where Hope Grows”, who was there for a special showing of the movie.
“Where Hope Grows” tells the story of a baseball player whose professional career was cut short due to his personal problems is being awakened and motivated by a young man with Down Syndrome who works at the local grocery store. Desanctis is the grocery store employee. We also saw in person another young man with Down Syndrome, Tim Harris, owner of Tim’s Place restaurant in Albuquerque New Mexico.
Aktion Club advisors Garnell Kemp, parents Majorie Archer and Frances Rolle, accompanied them.
Aktion Club members are looking forward to attend convention 2016 in Toronto.

Saturday, leaving 6am sharp from Harbour Bay Shopping Centre in front of First Caribbean Bank 30 miles headed West. In order to complete this ride it is recommended that you have done some recent cycling! Leaving P/I Bridges optional at the end! The pace will range from 18–20+mph, two-hour duration.
Sunday, leaving 6am sharp from Harbour Bay Shopping Centre in front of First Caribbean Bank 40-50 miles headed East. This ride is not recommended if you have not cycled recently or first timers! P/I Bridges optional at the end! The pace will range from 18–20+mph, 3-3.5-hour duration (cyclists are invited to join in anywhere along the route).

Morning rides west - Wednesday and Friday, 4:45am, Cable Beach Police Station, West Bay Street, 20-mile ride route. Headed East to Montague and return. One-hour duration. Cyclists capable of 14+mph welcome. Ride leaves promptly (cyclists are invited to join in anywhere along the route). Afternoon rides west - Tuesdays and Thursdays, leaving 5:30pm sharp, parking lot next to Lyford Cay Gas Station. 18 or 24 miles depending if you do second loop. This is an advanced cyclist’s ride. The pace will range from 20+mph Intermediate, 18-22mph see Spyder.
Morning ride east - Tuesdays & Thursdays, leaving 5am sharp, start/end Seagrapes Shopping Centre-(under the big sign), East Prince Charles Drive: 1-1.5 hour duration. Cyclists capable of 14+mph welcome. Prince Charles Dr-Eastern Road-Shirley St-Church St-East Bay-Eastern Road- Prince Charles. Please have lights attached to your bike.
Holy Qubtic-Church. - The Holy Qubtic-Church presents an examination of Christianity before Christ at the Akhepran International Academy on September 12 at 7pm. The event features Dr AJ Varmah. For more information, contact 426-1148.
Rotary Club of Nassau. - The Rotary Club of Nassau presented a donation of composition books, pens, pencils, erasers, and other essentials students need to begin the 2015/16 school year to the school principal, Sylvia Scavella.
“The Rotary Club of Nassau has presented to Stephen Dillet Primary school a check to help the needy children to obtain uniforms, and we also presented school supplies. This is an ongoing project. It’s one of our projects,” said Dotty Rae, president of the Rotary Club of Nassau.
“We do a reading programme with these children and we keep in touch with them on a one-to-one basis.”
President Rae also said RCN has a New Generations Club and an EarlyAct Club in the primary school, which is an early introduction to the precepts and mission of Rotary International.
Several members of RCN Board of Directors were present to donate the supplies.
“So basically it’s just to help a community as we are the City Club and this is part of the City of Nassau,” said President Rae.
