Fitzgerald, Rubis and integrity

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Jerome Fitzgerald likes to talk about his integrity. Lately, he has been defending his integrity against those who he says have accused his government of being corrupt.

Well, my question for the minister is this: Where was the integrity in leaving the residents of Marathon in the dark when a toxic gas leak threatened their health and safety? The government, Fitzgerald included, knew about the leak for two years before they said anything to the public. Even then, they only came clean after the truth was exposed by an opposition Senator.

Fitzgerald is the people of Marathon’s representative in the Parliament. He was elected to protect them, defend them and look out for their interests. Instead, he admittedly left them in the dark when dangerous, poisonous toxins were leaking into the water they bathe in, cook with and maybe even drink.

His excuse was that if he had spoken out earlier, he might have lost his job in the Cabinet!

The dictionary defines integrity as: “Adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty.”

Mr Fitzgerald, do you honestly think that failing to warn the ordinary citizens you swore to protect of a grave danger that was facing them, just to keep your own job, fits the definition?

And precisely the same applies for our Attorney General, Allyson Maynard-Gibson, more popularly know as the Wicked Witch of the West. For well over a year this odious evil creature sat on a report that proved beyond a shadow of doubt that many of the good people of the Marathon constituency were very likely to suffer from serious (and quite possibly deadly) health issues associated with the toxic gas leak. She and Fitzgerald did nothing to protect the residents of Marathon; instead they chose to protect the corrupt Christie-led PLP government and the gas service station operators in the Bahamas (who no doubt financially support the PLP in a big way).
