THE Urban Renewal Commission yesterday announced the launch of its first annual “Urban Games” track and field meet that is set to take place this Saturday at the Thomas A Robinson Stadium.

Urban Renewal Co-Chair Cynthia “Mother” Pratt said the aim of the Urban Games, a continuation of Urban Renewal’s sporting league, is to “encourage and uplift” the nation’s youth as well as provide wholesome entertainment and fun activities for spectators.

“Our objective is to involve everybody, even the child who feels they don’t have talent,” said Mrs Pratt.

“The opportunity is there for them, and that’s what Urban Renewal is all about. It’s about all of us.”

According to officials, the event on Saturday will pit runners from different communities against each other in racing events. Various members of Parliament are expected to take part in 100 and 200 metre dashes, while pastors will compete in 50 and 100 metre races. There also will be a relay event with the armed forces.

The event will also showcase the Junkanoo relays, which will see participation from nine Junkanoo groups, inclusive of the Saxons, Genesis, and the Valley Boys.

The event is also free of charge and open to the public, officials said.

“We’re asking for the entire public to please come on out and be a part of these exciting games,” Urban Renewal Sports Coordinator Wilton Russell said. “This fun-filled event is absolutely free of charge and promises to be a day of excitement for participants and spectators alike.”

The event will take place from 9am to 8pm on Saturday.
