EDITOR, The Tribune
I thank Nicole Burrows’ for her Politicole article on December 22 entitled “Check your BTC bills (and Cable Bahamas)” which addressed some of her unhappy and unfortunate billing experiences with the two communications monopolies in this country.
I would like to add two more reasons to check the bills that we, the customer, receive from these companies.
In BTC’s case, they charge $1.25 per month for “telephone monthly rental” for my home phone although we have been free to buy and use our own phones for 15 or more years. Makes you wonder if BTC knows that, much less tells their customers.
Cable gives you the option to buy or rent their set top boxes but maybe it’s time both companies gave us three equipment options: buy, rent or rent to own.
My other billing gripe is that both companies now charge late fees: Cable’s is $5.50 and BTC’s is $5 but depending on how and when you pay them, especially late in the month or near to the due date, they still rush to impose the late fee. Then it becomes your problem to chase behind them to get them to remove the charge.
Most people probably pay the late fee without questioning whether they actually owe it, another potentially lucrative revenue source to go along with the VAT “rounding” that Ms Burrows experienced. Sadly we’re stuck with these dinosaurs unless and until real competition arrives in this country.

and we know they're not gonna let any competitors into their monopolies so all we can do is bend over for $5 a pop.....
