Christie must go after failed vote

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Following the second rejection in three years of the government’s direct proposals by the people of The Bahamas, Mr Christie MUST resign.

And the members of his party who have not made him do so must be dealt with by the Bahamian people at the next elections.

What we have today is an absolutely untenable situation. A prime minister in whom the people have clearly lost confidence – and he refuses to leave.

Not only that, but he wants to remain in office for another year (and more ), with control of the public treasury under his authority.

The potential damage that can be done by someone in his position trying to rescue his shattered image, cannot be overestimated.

This situation is precisely why we MUST have changes to the constitution that the PEOPLE requested  and not those that politicians may decide.

Changes that give the people the power of direct action to recall a member of parliament when he has failed to respect the wishes of the people.

We cannot be stuck with a leader:

• whose national security policies have failed to make us safer in our homes or on the streets;

• whose economic policies have failed to produce job growth for the people;

• whose immigration policies have abused investors and permanent residents, while ignoring legitimate rights of persons born in The Bahamas. Policies which have taken us back

to bad times in our history that we hoped never to see again;

• whose weak leadership has failed to maintain order and decorum among his ministers and party spokesmen;

• whose taxation policies have created severe hardship for the most vulnerable among us, while making doing (or staying in) business more difficult than at any time in our history;

• and whose word  to the Bahamian people simply cannot be trusted after he violated the promise to leave after two years in this term, and to respect the results of the gambling

referendum.

In the business world, when the head of  a company fails on so many levels and no longer has the confidence of the owners, he is asked to leave IMMEDIATELY.

So, Mr Christie, we now ask you – PLEASE LEAVE US.
