DENVAUGHN Whymns, performing double duties yesterday on day two of the IAAF World U-18 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, finished eighth in the boys' long jump, while qualifying for the semi-final of the 110 metre hurdles.
Whymns, who is expected to be back home with other team-mates next week for the Commonwealth Youth Games here, soared 7.20 metres or 23-feet, 71/2-inches for eighth place in the long jump.
His best effort came on his second attempt. His series of jumps included 7.05m (23-13/4), 7.06m (23-2), 7.00m (22-113/4), 7.04m (23-11/4) and 7.15m (23-51/2).
Cuba got the gold and silver from Maikel Y Vidal with a leap of 7.88m (25-101/4) and Lester A Lescay with 7.79m (25-63/4). Andreas Samiel Bucsa of Romana picked up the bronze with 7.47m (24-61/4).
Whymns, in his other event, advanced to the semi-final of the 110m hurdles in a personal best of 13.56 seconds for second in his heat. Jamaica's De'Jour Russell had the fastest qualifying time of 13.08 for a championship record as he held off Whymns, while Spain's Enrique Llopis had the second fastest time of 13.47 - a personal best - to win his heat.
Today, Whymns will run out of lane six in the last of two heats of the semi-final of the 110m hurdles. He will have to be one of first three finishers or one of the next two fastest finishers to advance to the final later in the day.
Another Bahamian qualified for a final as Doneisha Anderson was the first female to make it to the top eight when she won her heat of the girls' 400m semi-final in 54.37. She trailed Barbara Malikova (53.77) from the Czech Republic and Mary Moraa (53.88) from Kenya, who got first and second in the same heat.
Anderson, with a season and personal best of 54.33, will run out of lane five in the final in between Malikova (lane four) and Moraa (lane six).
Two Bahamians contested the semi-final of the boys' 400m, but neither Corey Sherrod or Tyrell Simms were able to advance to the final.
In their respective heats, Sherrod was sixth in 48.56 to place 17th overall, while Simms' time of 49.38 placed him eighth in his heat for 22nd overall.
The fastest qualifying time going into the final was 46.86 by Anthony Cox of Jamaica, the winner of Simms' heat. Bruno Benedito da Dilva, the winner of Sherrod's heat, had the second fastest time of 46.87, a personal best.
