A Cabinet minister yesterday confirmed he was looking into claims of a mass shredding of mail at the General Post Office, adding that workers were close to catching up with the mail backlog.
Renward Wells, minister of transport and local government, who has responsibility for the Post Office, said: “I’m being advised that there is a process by which all post offices discard certain kinds and types of mails. As minister I’m drilling down into that. The Ministry will be making a statement very soon on the situation.
"I can’t speak to the claims made by the union and others, but the ministry will put out a formal statement. I am advised that there is a process by which mail is discarded. I am being advised as to what that process is and, at the end of the day, the ministry will have a formal statement regarding what was spoken of.”
Attempts to reach post office officials were unsuccessful up to press time yesterday over suggestions made by Kimsley Ferguson, president of the Bahamas Public Service Union (BPSU), that he had received information mail was being brought from various post offices to the East Hill Street site to be shredded.
When pressed further on the matter, Mr Wells replied: “There is always the facts and the extrapolation of the facts to make it more than it is. I don’t believe that any sensible persons or sensible institution would take importance and minimse importance.”
Mr Wells commended post office staff for working long and "extremely hard under difficult circumstances".
"We are close to being caught up on the mail backlog,” he said. “The very assertion that members would be shredding important mail, I don’t believe that speaks to the character of workers in the post office.”

YEP, they are catching up. I just received my insurance policy post marked December 7, 2017, expired November 22, 2018. Thanks. I drove all year without my insurance papers in my car.
