NPWBA: Temple Christian Suns top Sparks to win title

THE New Providence Women’s Basketball Association, which was scheduled to be played over two days at the CI Gibson Gymnasium, was reduced to just one day after only five of the eight registered teams showed up to participate on Saturday.

When it was all over, the Temple Christian Suns, coached by Keno Demeritte, emerged as the champions, winning the title over the St Thomas More Sparks. St Francis & St Francis Shockers had to settle for third place.

Finishing fourth was the Freedom Baptist Academy Warriors and the Kingsway Academy Saints were fifth.

Xavier’s, Teleos and Garvin Tynes all dropped out at the last minute due to the lack of support with transportation.

The NPWBA made it a treat for all of the participants by providing them with water, drinks, sandwiches and snacks in addition to the trophies and certificates for their participation.

Now that the tournament, which serves as a developmental one for the association, the NPWBA will turn its attention to its ladies’ programme that will get started on Thursday, March 1 at the DW Davis Gymnasium. Four teams have confirmed their participation. They are the Operators, Cheetahs, Angels and Elites.

The league should have gotten started from last year but was postponed because of a lack of interest and not enough funding to support the teams.
