TWO people were charged in the Freeport Magistrate’s Court yesterday in separate incidents for overstaying their time in the Bahamas.

Johnny Pierre, 26, of Haiti, appeared before Magistrate Charlton Smith in Court Two where he pled guilty to overstaying and was ordered to pay a $300 fine or serve two months at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.

According to the particulars given in court, Pierre admitted to having arrived illegally in the Bahamas by boat from Haiti in October 2017. He remained in the country without legal status, and was reportedly found working at the time of his arrest.

Pierre paid his fine and was turned over to Department of Immigration officials.

In a separate matter, Leidy Mirelys Guerrero Ortiz, 22, of the Dominican Republic, was also charged with overstaying.

According to the particulars given in court, she arrived in the country from Colombia via Cuba and was admitted to Nassau on November 25, 2017. She was granted visitor’s status for a period of seven days.

Ortiz did not seek to extend her visitor’s status and had overstayed her time by more than three months at time of her arrest.

She pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay a $1,500 fine or serve three months in prison. Ortiz paid the fine. Both she and Pierre were flown to New Providence to be detained at the Carmichael Road Detention Centre before being deported.
