Senior accountant to gain lifetime award

Senior accountant, Philip Stubbs, pictured, will be presented with the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award at the financial services industry's upcoming November 2 honours ceremony.

This award recognises individuals who have reached the pinnacle of their career within the Bahamian financial services industry, and who have made an outstanding contribution over a long period.

Mr Stubbs is a former Bahamas country managing partner of Ernst & Young (EY), taking early retirement from the firm in June 2007. His tenure encompassed 37 years in accounting, auditing and business advisory services, serving international, domestic and public sector clients in industries such as professional services; financial services; health care; utilities; transport and shipping; and retail and wholesale merchandising.

Mr Stubbs served as Securities Commission and Compliance Commission chairman from July 2007 to June 2012; director of the Central Bank of The Bahamas from July 2009 to June 2012; and as a member of the Public Disclosure Commission for many years until June 2015.

He currently serves as a member of the e University of The Bahamas (UoB) Board of Trustees , as well as a director for several Central Bank, Securities Commission and Insurance Commission licensees. Most of these appointments are in non-executive and independent roles, and involve mostly serving as audit committee chair.

In addition to his experience in governance and oversight roles, Mr Stubbs also provides accounting and business consulting services in the areas of corporate governance, risk management, financial reporting and compliance with VAT and Business Licence requirements.

These services are provided to entities in the public and private sectors, covering financial services; professional services firms; service industries; and retail/wholesale merchandising.

Mr Stubbs' professional achievements and participation include:

• Providing professional and advisory services as audit committee chair of the Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) - a non-executive, non-Board member function pursuant to the URCA Act.

• Providing technical support and advice as a consultant to the finance and audit committee of the Public Hospitals Authority (PHA).

• Acting as guest lecturer at the College of The Bahamas (now University of The Bahamas) and the Eugene Dupuch Law School.

• Winner of the Minister of Financial Services Award of Excellence in 2006.

• Member of the steering committee for the Implementation of International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) by the Government.

• Treasurer and executive Board member of the Bahamas Children's Emergency Hostel.
