LEASHJA Grant and her Lakehead Thunderwolves are headed to the Ontario University Association semi-finals.
The Thunderwolves scored a 79-71 win over the Guelph Gryphons Saturday night in the quarter-final of the OUA playoffs in the race for the Critelli Cup.
Grant finished with 24 points, nine rebounds and five steals in 22 minutes. She shot 11-18 from the field through constant double and triple teams over the course of the game.
Lakehead advances to play the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the Critelli Cup semi-final on Wednesday, February 27.
“Well we knew Guelph would bring it as they always do. They’re tenacious and well coached. “We bent but didn’t break. Our key players made key plays and shots the last three minutes to stave off a Guelph barrage from three,” said Lakehead head coach John Kriener.
“I’m so proud of this group. I’m looking forward to our game against Ottawa Wednesday.
In other U Sports Conferences, men’s programmes concluded their regular season schedules and are gearing up for their respective playoff runs.
Qyemah Gibson and the St Mary’s Huskies finished one game shy of the undefeated regular season and suffered the only blemish on their record in the finale, an 88-76 loss to the UNB Reds.
The Huskies finished the season at 19-1 and remain in first place in the AUS standings. They will have a bye to the semi-finals in next weekend’s AUS Championship.
In just his second game back from injury, Azaro Roker helped his St Francis Xavier X-Men clinch a playoff spot with an 8-13 record.
Roker finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots in the X-Men’s 95-80 win over the UPEI Panthers
Jordan Wilson, Shamar Burrows and the Dalhousie Tigers (14-6) also earned a spot in the playoffs and concluded the season with a weekend sweep over the Memorial Seahawks.
Trevon Grant and the Acadia Axemen were eliminated from playoff contention with a 72-70 loss to the UNB Reds.
Acadia finished the season 6-14.
The Subway AUS Championships will be hosted March 1-3 at the Scotiabank Center in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
The tournament opens on Friday, March 1 when the No.5 ranked X-Men will face No.4 seed Cape Breton in the first quarterfinal.
That game will be followed by No.6 seed DMemorial and No.3 seed Dalhousie.
The winner of quarterfinal one will face the Huskies while the winner of quarterfinal two will face the UNB Reds in Saturday’s semi-final.
