THE U Sports Men’s Basketball Final Eight featured several Bahamian players, however, each fell short in their bid for a National Championship.
Jordan Wilson, Shamar Burrows and the Dalhousie Tigers finished fourth overall, while Qyemah Gibson and the St Mary Huskies finished sixth overall at the tournament hosted at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The Tigers suffered an 84-66 loss to the Ryerson Rams in the bronze medal game yesterday. Both Burrows and Wilson played sparingly throughout the tournament.
“It is tough – you only get so many opportunities (to win a medal),” said Dalhousie head coach Rick Plato. “We played as hard as we could, but I think we ran out of gas, which is no excuse.
“We had a very successful year and faced a lot of adversity, I am so proud of this team,” he added.
Wilson gave the Tigers a brief 28-27 lead midway through the second quarter, but the Rams took a 40-32 lead into the half. They finished the third on a 12-4 surge and led 62-44 headed into the fourth.
Dalhousie opened the tournament with a 74-65 win over the UBC Thunderbirds to advance to the Championship Semi-final where they would eventually lose 76-65 to the Carleton Ravens.
The Huskies lost to the Thunderbirds, 95-86 in the consolation final. St Mary’s opened the tournament with a 94-78 loss to the Calgary Dinos in the first quarter-final and were relegated to the consolation round.
In the consolation semifinal, they defeated the Concordia Stingers 84-67. Gibson finished with eight points and seven rebounds.
Carleton went on to win the gold medal with an 83-49 victory over Calgary.
In the Atlantic University Sport men’s basketball championship, Dalhousie pulled off the biggest upset of the season with a 65-55 win over St Mary’s.
In the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association, Roosevelt Whylly and the Holland College Hurricanes will open play in the CCAA National Championship.
The Hurricanes defeated the Mount Allison Mounties 86-71 in the ACAA Championship final to capture their seventh straight conference title and enter the tournament as the No.1 overall seed.
