MIAMI SHORES, Florida – The University of the Bahamas’ golf team turned in respectable scores after the team’s first ever international competition against Johnson and Wales University and Keiser University at the Miami Shores Golf Course this weekend.

Alex Gibson led the team with a 18-hole 90. John Hall shot 94 and Deangelo Stubbs shot 110.

“There’s a lot of potential here with these guys,” head coach Jim Duncombe said. “They hit the ball pretty good but they just lack the experience, other than that next time out I think they will do a whole lot better.”

The local pro said the players know exactly what they need to work on to improve on the experience. “They held their own today but we are going to have to work a lot on their short game. A lot.”

Alex Gibson birdied four holes and like the rest of the team had to push through some early morning intermittent showers on the course.

“I played alright in terms of my short game but my long game could have been a lot better,” he said. “It was a great learning experience and I really hope to do better next time. I had a few putts for birdie and to save par so I was really impressed with that part of my game.”

John Hall was the first Mingo out on the course and was struggling with his tee shots.

“My short game was really working for me today and that really what saved my score. My driving and tee-shots really weren’t working for me today and if I can work on that part of my game I will be really good.”

Hall also said the experience will help in the long run.

Stubbs said he takes a lot from the experience even though he had some struggles on the 18-hole course. “It was great to have this experience on a different course and playing with players from Florida was a really good,” he said.

“I had some ups and downs today. I was really doing good with my driving, my short game and my putting but I’m going to have to really work on my irons though.”
