THE University of the Bahamas Mingoes got close but could not get over the defending NPVA women’s champions Panthers and fell in three sets at the DW Davis Gymnasium on Wednesday.
The Panthers defeated the Mingoes 25-21, 25-16, 25-16 to remain undefeated at 5-0. The Mingoes drop to 1-4 on the season.
“At the beginning of the game our service was really working for us and that’s what kept us in the game because every time we had a successful serve they were making mistakes on their side of the court,” said Mingoes captain Alivia Culmer.
“And then when we started to lose focus on our serve along with the energy level dropping in the second and third set we just could not hold on.
“That is something we really need to work on,” she added.
Culmer scored eight points for the Mingoes, including two aces, to lead the Mingoes.
Ulrica Woodside scored five points as well.
Raechel Knowles had 14 points to the lead the Panthers.
The Mingoes were able to challenge the defending champions Panthers and almost won the first set.
The team had two service errors and could not stand up to the outside hitting from the Panthers in the last five rallies of the first set.
In the second and third sets, the team couldn’t get the Panthers out of their rhythm and dropped those two sets.
“This match showed us that we can beat a team of this magnitude,” Culmer added.
“For us to get into double digits against them and getting within a few points of beating them it shows us that the team has definitely progressed.
“Once we keep pushing we could be a force to be reckoned with it.”
The Mingoes next play the Truckers at 3:30pm on Sunday, October 27, at the DW Davis Gymnasium.
