SOME of the biggest names in sports have expressed an interest in lending assistance to the Hurricane Dorian relief effort.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, a frequent visitor to the Bakers Bay Golf and Ocean Club during the NFL offseason, joined with the Discovery Land Company Foundation in a fundraising venture.

“Our family has been travelling to the beautiful paradise of The Abacos for many years and we are devastated by the events of this tragic hurricane. While visiting we’ve built relationships with the incredible Bahamians who call these islands home, and now it’s our responsibility to help them,” Brady said in a mesaage posted on Instagram,

“Friends of mine have started The Abaco Relief Fund which will ensure 100% of donations go directly to relief aid. Follow the link in my bio to support this fund, or share this as we continue to spread awareness.”

Discovery Land Company Foundation is a humanitarian group that spearheads fundraising and community outreach projects around the world.

According to the organisation, donations for the Abaco Relief Fund will be 100% committed to directly assist with the immediate disaster relief needs of Bahamian citizens including Baker’s Bay employees and their families. Special focus will be on “safety of the people, their essential needs such as water, food, shelter, medical needs, and the recovery of the community.”

“We are saddened by the devastating effects of Hurricane Dorian and are committed to helping with disaster relief and recovery,” the resort said in a statement. “The Discovery Land Company Foundation is coordinating humanitarian efforts to help the community of Abaco and has created the Abaco Relief Fund where 100% of donations will go directly to relief aid.”

Brady, a six-time Super Bowl champion, three time NFL MVP and 14 time Pro Bowler was filmed in a viral video at Bakers Bay in a pickup basketball game alongside NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan.

Boston Red Sox manager, Alex Cora, sent well wishes to the Bahamas in his pre game conference just before his team took on the Minnesota Twins.

A native of Puerto Rico, Cora was very vocal in an attempt to garner support for his home country in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017. He led several philanthropic ventures in relief efforts on the US territory.

“First things first, our thoughts and prayers are with people in the Bahamas,” Cora said, “I thought two years ago was unreal what I saw when I went back home, but this is (pause), this is tough to watch. Obviously, with time, people are going to help these people out, but you keep praying. Hopefully, it’s not going to be as bad as it looks. It looks real bad.”

Cora has three World Series titles with the Red Sox, once as a player (2007) and twice as a manager (2017-18).
