Tribune Fashion Report at the 77th Golden globes

With Karin Herig and Cara Hunt

SPLIT: Olivia Colman (“The Crown”)

Karin says: “This is probably the worst style Olivia could have picked for her figure. It makes her look like a red Michelin Man. Truly, I am baffled her team OK’ed this. The high waist coupled with the extremely puffy sleeves and high neck just does not work. That shade of red, however, is quite striking on her.”

Cara says: “I really like this dress. I thought the red looked amazing on her and I think this is something a lot of people couldn’t necessarily pull off, but I think she nailed it 100 percent. And I loved her ‘I am so drunk I can’t even talk’ acceptance speech.”

FAIL: Kerry Washington

(“Little Fires Everywhere”)

Karin says: “Time after time Kerry has shown us that she has abysmal taste when it comes to her red carpet choices. Well, she’s done it again. I understand being a bit risqué, but this jacket is just tacky. The belly chain leading to the slinky skirt just looks unfinished. I guess I like her new sleek bob.”

Cara says: “Kerry is so hit and miss on the red carpet and sadly she more often than not lands on the miss side. So, I really like the hair and I see where she was going with the attempt at a sleek, glam, sexy vibe. I just don’t know if I am feeling it. It is definitely not her worst look. Let’s just be glad for two-way tape.”

HIT: Ana de Armas (“Knives Out”)

Karin says: “First of all, I loved ‘Knives Out’ so much (go see it!), and I love this dress. I’m normally not one for all-sequined gowns, but this works for me. The midnight blue is gorgeous on her and the style is such a classic ball gown cut; love the little belt and bow at the waist.”

Cara says: “This is such a classic, elegant ball gown look. It’s lovely on her and that blue colour is just dreamy, very, very lovely. I love it all, hair accessories – the whole thing. This is the perfect dress for her to make her entrance to the world’s movie stage in.

SPLIT: Rooney Mara (“Mary Magdalene”)

Karin says: “Oh look, it’s a goth version of Princess Leia. The dress itself is not bad, in fact, it’s quite nice, if nothing spectacular. But it’s that weird sparkly hairdo that ruins the look. I get she wanted to do something different, but she comes off looking slightly demented.”

Cara says: “I get a Star Wars/Princess Leia/Padmé Amidala vibes for sure with her hair. The dress is cute as well, although the top could be slightly more fitted, but it’s an all right look. Nothing to write home about, but nothing to be ashamed of either.

HIT: Billy Porter (“Pose”)

Karin says: “How many angels had to sacrifice their wings so Billy could have the most fabulous train on the red carpet? While I’ve appreciated some of his past ensembles, I’ve not always loved them. This is just perfect. Still outrageous, but sophisticated at the same time.”

Cara says: “Is Billy ever not fabulous? Everything he wears is just a Statement with a capital ‘S’ and this is just no exception. It’s white feathers, so much drama! And he is just rocking this outfit. Two thumbs up!”

SPLIT: Taylor Swift (“Cats”)

Karin says: “Bold of her to choose a floral print for the Golden Awards. But that’s where my compliments end. It’s just too much, too big a print. I like the silk material and the cut, except for that tragic triangle cut-out in the middle.”

Cara says: “Taylor always nails her red carpet looks and this is just another lovely gown. The print of the dress is not too overpowering, which can sometimes be the case with floral prints, and I love the cute cut-out detail and the wispy updo.”

SPLIT: Jennifer Lopez (“Hustlers”)

Karin says: “A late delivered Christmas present, that’s what she looks like. I sometimes like an oversized bow, but this is just way too big, and there are two of them! The colour combo of gold, green and white isn’t bad, but the design of the dress just makes JLo look slightly ridiculous.”

Cara says: “OK, so I know that many people will hate it, but I don’t know, it reminds me of a Christmas present with that big bow and I secretly, or not so secretly, love it. It’s so fun and big, and her make-up and hair are really on point.”

FAIL: Gwyneth Paltrow (“The Politician”)

Karin says: “It’s been a roller coaster of emotions for me with this gown. First I hated it, then I liked it, even if I desperately wished it were a different colour, and now I’m back to hating it. Maybe more ruffles in the stomach area would have improved it.”

Cara says: “This is just hideous, plain and simple. I mean, first of all, who chooses that shade of brown willingly? And then the sheerness is just not attractive, and why add the necklace? Just overall a hot mess. Sorry, Gwynnie.”
