THE PRESS BOX: COWBOYS HAPPY WITH NEW STAFF

By INIGO 'NAUGHTY' ZENICAZELAYA

COWBOYS VP Stephen Jones seems to be quite happy with the coaching staff new head coach Mike McCarthy has assembled.

He recently offered these comments regarding the Cowboys’ new coaching staff.

“Very pleased with what he’s put together. It seems like we have a lot of experience. Overall, he’s real pleased with how its come together.”

The Cowboys top brass had been seemingly hesitant to officially part ways with head coach Jason Garrett.

However, once they did, it took them no time to bring in McCarthy and allow him to round up his old gang, as far as assistant coaches are concerned.

Offensively, McCarthy opted to keep offensive coordinator Kellen Moore around to call plays, which should help the offence keep the same sense of familiarity this offseason.

The addition of offensive line coach Joe Philbin also gives them somebody who could potentially take on an expanded role on offence, as Philbin’s past experience as a head coach, albeit for the Dolphins, will come into play at some point.

The Cowboys held firm and stuck to the script of bringing in proven candidates.

Hiring defensive coordinator Mike Nolan. Then defensive line coach Jim Tomsula was also one of the more notable coaching hires thanks to the job he did with the Washington Redskins.

John Fassel established himself as one of the best special teams coordinators in the league following his tenure with the Los Angeles Rams.

Despite all the talent that Dallas has put together in recent years, the onus will fall on the coaching staff to ensure that they are able to mesh and finally meet their high expectations.

DAK AND COOP NOT

GOING ANYWHERE

Will McClay, vice president of player personnel, acknowledged the difficulty the team will have retaining its best players, most notably Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper.

“We expect Dak to be our quarterback,” McClay said Wednesday, per USA Today’s Jori Epstein. “If the owner/GM says we’re going to get it done, he signs the cheques. So we’ll get that done.”

Clay further went on to explain the issues presented by the NFL’s salary cap: “It’s going to be a tough deal. It’s the NFL. You have your quarterback you have to pay, you have a receiver, you have good players. And when you have good players, you have to figure out how to pay them or how to survive.”

Epstein added the general belief is the Cowboys will re-sign Prescott and Cooper this offseason.
