A man was charged with murder yesterday in connection with a fatal stabbing that occurred on Raymond Road last week.

Franco Ferguson, 23, appeared before Magistrate Kara Turnquest-Deveaux charged with the death of Charles Demeritte on September 11.

According to initial police reports, shortly after midnight on the day in question, police received reports of a physical argument between two men which occurred at a residence on Raymond Road.

Police said when officers responded to the complaint, they saw and spoke to a man who told them he was visiting the mother of his children, when another man with whom he was familiar and who was at the residence, approached him and an argument followed. Police said the disagreement escalated into a physical altercation and when the man produced a knife, the man with whom the police spoke said he was able to take the knife from him.

However, during the argument, he stabbed the other man. The victim was taken to the hospital by a private vehicle where he later died from his injuries, police said.

During the hearing yesterday, Ferguson was not required to enter a plea and the matter was adjourned to December 7 for service of a voluntary bill of indictment (VBI).

In the meantime, the accused was denied bail and remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services until trial.

Ferguson, who is represented by attorney Ian Cargill, has a right to apply to the Supreme Court for bail.
