A MAN was remanded to prison yesterday over allegations he raped a child over the span of four years.

Maurice Sherman appeared before Senior Assistant Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain charged with five counts relating to sexual abuse of the young girl.

The prosecution alleged the man engaged in unlawful sex with the child sometime during June 2016 when she was just 10-years-old.

It is also alleged he raped the young girl again in June 2018 when she was 11 and sometime between February and June of 2019 after she turned 12-years-old.

The defendant was also accused of engaging in unlawful intercourse with the child in January and September of this year.

Due to the nature of the charges, the man was not required to enter a plea and the matter was adjourned to November 14 for service of a voluntary bill of indictment (VBI).

Bail was denied and the defendant was remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services until trial.

He has a right to apply to the Supreme Court for bail.
