A 28-year-old man who admitted stabbing his child’s mother about the body during an argument was yesterday sentenced to six months in prison.
Shaquille Sands was charged with causing harm after he stabbed his girlfriend’s left thigh and right wrist with a kitchen knife on September 30.
The prosecution said on the day in question, the woman reported to officers at the Grove Police Station that she was attacked by her boyfriend at their home.
She said Sands stabbed her in her left thigh and right wrist with a brown kitchen knife.
Sands was subsequently arrested and taken to the police station, where he denied the offence.
The accused told officers that he and the woman were involved in a heated argument when she “slipped down into a chair opposite the bed onto the knife lying in the chair,” causing injuries to her body.
The court was also told that the two had been in a relationship for five years and also had a child together.
When Sands appeared before Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt Evans, he pleaded guilty to the offence, but sought to lay the blame on his child’s mother.
He explained that whenever they would argue, she would intentionally involve the police in an attempt to place him behind bars.
“When I catch her doing her things, she insist on trying to jail me like I could always be around her like she have something over my head,” he told the court.
Sands went on to describe himself as a hardworking, self-employed man who stayed out of trouble. He also told the court he had no previous convictions.
“I don’t do crime. I ain’t in no gang. I’m a mason, contractor and carpenter,” he said.
In response, Magistrate Vogt-Evans said his actions could not be excused, adding he stabbed the complainant not once, but twice.
This, she said, was a serious offence.
As a result, Sands was sentenced to six months at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.
After the sentence was read, Sands replied “wow” as he placed his hand over his head.
However, Magistrate Vogt-Evans told Sands to be thankful he was being sentenced for only six months.
Aldieno Rolle, 27, also appeared in court yesterday, charged with one count each of damage, trespassing and assault.
Police allege that Rolle unlawfully caused damage to Keisha Edward’s iPhone valued at $500, trespassed on her premises and assaulted her.
During his hearing before Senior Magistrate Derence Rolle-Davis yesterday, Rolle pleaded guilty to causing damage but denied the other offences which were later withdrawn by prosecution.
He was ordered to pay $500 in compensation to the complainant and the matter was adjourned to December 17.
