TWO men who were caught fighting in the road over a cellphone in the early hours of the morning were yesterday warned to keep the peace.
Lynden Farrington, 26, and Kenneth Clarke, 28, were arrested after police caught them fighting near a local bar around 3.10am on March 14.
The court was told officers arrested the men after they noticed the pair assaulting each other in the Baillou Hill Road north. Farrington and Clarke were then taken to the Central Police Station where they were interviewed by officers a few hours later. When questioned, Clarke denied fighting in a public place, while Farrington owned up to the offence. During his interview, Farrington also told officers the fight only occurred because his co-defendant had tried to steal his phone.
During the hearing, Farrington said that morning, he and Clarke were playing dominoes with some of their other friends. He said during the match, he placed his phone on the bench next to him. He said when Clarke lost the game, he stood up and walked to the side of him where his phone was lying, before announcing that he was going home. Farrington claimed another man then informed him that Clarke was “walking off” with his cellphone. He said he then chased after Clarke and asked him why he was trying to steal from him. He said after he confronted Clarke, the “fight started”.
Clarke on the other hand claimed the phone had dropped on the floor. He said when he had picked up the device, Farrington asked him for it. He said after he handed it to him, he “broke off running trying to get home”.
After listening to both men’s explanations, Magistrate Rolle Davis told Farrington and Clarke that “some things did not require a fuss”. As a result, he urged them to “exercise good sense” in the future and discharged them both with a warning.
“Don’t come back to court because you may not be so blessed,” he stated.
