BEFORE leaving for the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, over the weekend, Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis said he hoped to use the event to sensitise world leaders about the impacts the crisis has on small nations like The Bahamas.
He said he also hopes to have discussions about easier access to climate change funding as well as monetising the country’s “carbon sinks” as another revenue stream.
Mr Davis spoke to reporters at Lynden Pindling International Airport before leaving for the event, COP 26.
“Well first of all, we do appreciate that climate change is real and countries like ours are most vulnerable to the impacts and effects of climate change and we are the least amongst the nations to contribute to climate change, to the climate conditions that we are now experiencing,” he said when asked why it was so important for The Bahamas to have a seat at the table at a conference like COP 26.
“We do hope to rally up our allies, to join our voices for better access, easier access to funding, to the Climate Fund and the Green Fund in particular to assist us in building more resilience and to be able to withstand the impact and consequences of climate change.
“Our voices will be heard and I expect that many will join me in holding accountable those who are more responsible for climate change and having them contribute to our efforts to adapt and to mitigate against the consequences of climate change.”
He said during the week he and his delegation will be engaging with world superpowers to discuss the way forward in respect to their commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. “We hope to engage them and to have them sensitised to the reality of it... We also wish to seek how we can monetise our carbon sinks in The Bahamas. We think that’s a wonderful opportunity to create another revenue for the country, we’ll be pursuing all of those matters.”
A carbon sink is a forest, ocean, or other natural environment viewed in terms of its ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Mr Davis will be back in the country at the weekend.
