Academicians at the University of The Bahamas (UB), according to The Nassau Guardian, conducted a poll in which it was discovered that nearly 25 percent of its female participants were raped. This sobering statistic, I believe, is representative of a significant percentage of the overall population. I know of at least seven victims of sexual abuse, which underscores the troubling fact that rape in The Bahamas is a systemic issue. Famed American philosopher Dr Sam Harris once nonchalantly remarked that, if given a choice to get rid of either religion and rape, he wouldn’t hesitate to get rid of the former. Harris’ insensitive remarks would no doubt deeply offend rape victims at UB. Along with fellow New Atheists Christopher Hitchens, Daniel C Dennett and Richard Dawkins, Harris champions the Dawinian Evolutionary theory that British biologist Charles Darwin postulated in the latter part of the 19th century. Evolution is an alternative to biblical creationism, for which Harris and Co. have a disdain – for obvious reasons, not the least of which is having to give an account to Jesus Christ on the day of judgment. With God out of the picture, there are no moral absolutes with Harris and Co. Right and wrong are judged on the basis of human empathy. Militant atheists cannot even say with a straight face that rape is morally reprehensible.
Darwinism has had devastating ramifications in Hitler’s Germany, with his “survival of the fittest” ideology, in which the Führer attempted to preserve the purity of the Aryan race. Hitler was a racist.
In the Darwinian worldview, human beings (or homo sapiens) are a notch above apes, gorillas and orangutans – species that routinely engage in rape. Man is hence stripped of his imago dei. Scientists believe that they have found the missing link between man and his primal ancestors, with the purported discovery of the Pithecanthropus (ape-man), the Java Man (Homo Erectus) and Sinanthropus (Chinese-man). Any violent male aggression meted out against women is simply rationalized away as men exhibiting their primal urges to breed, as studies have purportedly demonstrated in the aggressive sexual behaviour of male apes. This seems to be the message hinted at in an American Scientist write-up entitled “Despicable, Yes, but Not Inexplicable” by one Craig Stanford. This write-up is similar to Duetsche Welle’s “Male apes are natural sexual harassers.” In this piece, the writer wrote the following:
“With baboons showing the same behaviour, the researchers suggest sexual intimidation might be a common trait in primates living in large groups – particularly when males are typically larger than females.
That would include humans. Huchard suggests that their recent findings “open the possibility that sexual intimidation has an evolutionary basis.” It would even explain sexual violence of men towards women.”
Again, notice the rationalization for rape. It is hoped that the academicians at UB do not subscribe to this aberrant worldview that removes God from the equation. Only a biblical worldview can successfully counter a belief system that has very little regard for women and children. The Bible makes it painstakingly clear that sexual perverts will be relegated to the lake of fire. Bahamian rapists, while behaving like a Pithecanthropus (ape-man), are human beings created in the image of God; and are fully aware that their crimes against women are sinful. Jude 10 calls such evildoers “brute beasts.”
I am willing to wager that many of these Bahamian perpetrators of sexual abuse were given a godless upbringing, where church and Sunday school attendance were few and far between.
The Progressive Liberal Party government, the Bahamas Christian Council, UB, Bahamas Crisis Centre and other stakeholders must all make a concerted effort to address the issue of rape in this country. I personally believe that corporal punishment with the cat-o-nine tail in a public setting would be a very effective deterrent to rape and other forms of sexual abuse. If Bahamian rapists persists in acting like a Pithecanthropus, then they should be treated like one.

This rather prolific contributor to the letters columns of our local print media writes; "Famed American philosopher Dr Sam Harris once nonchalantly remarked that, if given a choice to get rid of either religion and rape, he wouldn’t hesitate to get rid of the former. Harris’ insensitive remarks would no doubt deeply offend rape victims at UB". I suspect that he is totally wrong in this assumption. Why would anyone who has been raped be offended by the idea that being raped is just a price worth paying for being able to belong to a religious sect. There are hundreds of minors abused by Christian church leaders who would also probably agree with philosopher's cited quote.
