THE three-member team of Tatyana Madu, Kaylah Fox and Briana Houlgrave suffered a 2-1 loss to top seeded Mexico’s top team yesterday on day two of competition at Santo Domingo, The Dominican Republic.
In the No.1 singles match, Madu lost to Mexico’s Hanna Estrada (6-0, 6-1) while Houlgrave lost the No.2 match to Azul Vazquez-Lopez (6-0, 6-0) to give Mexico the tie.
Mexico completed the sweep in doubles play when Vazquez-Lopez and Monsteratt Cano would team up to secure the win over Madu and Kaylah Fox (6-0,6-1).
The Bahamas faces Costa Rica today as they look to regain a winning record. Mexico Team One leads Pool A at 2-0 with The Bahamas and Costa Rica at 1-1. The Dominican Republic Team One is still searching for its first win.
Coming off a second-place finish at the subregional level, Team Bahamas will now face off against the top finishers from the other regions and the host country in the Under-12 category. With a 4-1 record in the subregion 3, Team Bahamas returns to the Dominican Republic to compete amongst the best of the best.
Mexico Team 2 leads Group B at 2-0 followed by Dominican Republic 2 and Guatemala at 1-1 and El Salvador at 0-2. The Bahamas opened competition with a win over The Dominican Republic.
In singles play, Madu defeated Amelia Gerrero 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 and Kaylah Fox defeated Paz Cabral 6-3 6-2 to give The Bahamas the tie.
The Dominican Republic rebounded to win doubles play 6-2, 6-2 as Gerrero and Cabral defeated Houlgrave and Fox.
The event, played in boys and girls, begins with the group stage, from which four nations will qualify for the semifinals to later play the final. Team Bahamas comes off a second-place finish (4-1) at the subregional level to advance to the U-12 Team Final. Marion Bain serves as the head coach.
