The House of Assembly

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Our House of Assembly... over the past four-six years the practice and following of the so-called Westminster system has slowly but very surely been eroded — today every single MP, except Ministers, making a communication read off a script... the Rules says different - you may use notes.

A pre-written script could be the thoughts of any unelected person, a scriptwriter paid by the MP because the MP simply can’t put pen to paper and compose a rational argument. If the MP spoke without a script imagine the removing of hot-air and waste of gibberish...hours.

Madam Speaker, since opening of the new House kudos like your spirit and decorum.

Change the practice of reading off a script, which is not in the Rules of the House, except for Ministers making an official Communication.

Do we really have to have that constant opening about how proud they are of their Constituency, most, if not many, have not seen it since September 16th!

Should cellphones be permitted? MP, especially Ministers, are using them now to find newspaper articles and intel from the other end of the cell — of course not an elected MP... How can the MP provide a printed copy of documents they must table at the time of use using a cell phone for the means of ending the evidence or past document statement of a Minister? Impossible.

Why, or why the Leader of the House has to ask for an extension at 6.00pm every time... surely not necessary.

Points of Order... If you practice as they do in Westminster never would what we do be accepted...it is only the MP standing that gives the floor not the Speaker and the MP can talk till the kingdom comes without giving to the alleged Point of Order.

Wednesday every week for at least the morning session should be Prime Minister’s Question time... remember folks in the Minnis administration they left with over 400 Questions unanswered...yes 400! PM’s Question time every Wednesday morning.

The bahamian parliament is dysfunctional at best. Many of it's members don't understand or follow it's rules. It is simply a reflection of this society. The average voter does not know the role which their mp plays in it. What is a good mp to the average bahamian voter, in a more advanced countries, those functions are done by the local government,

Firstly, most 242 MPs only represent 5000 voters, compared to the average US, British or Canadian MP. Secondly, 242 MPs are only seen as access to personal privileges or perks based on PM appointments, whereas in the real Westminster system the MP is responsible for providing better legislation and not just manipulating the other two branches of Government. In 242, the other two branches are for the most part emasculated by politicians
