A 40-year-old man was remanded to prison yesterday on rape charges.
Larry Newton was charged with raping a 38-year-old woman at his first appearance before Magistrate Shaka Serville.
Police say Newton committed the act last May.
Due to the nature of the charge, he was not required to enter a plea and the case was adjourned to June 22 for service of a voluntary bill of indictment.
He was denied bail and remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services until that time.
In a separate matter, 30-year-old Anton Carey was charged with indecently assaulting a ten-year-old girl on February 25.
Carey denied the allegations during his hearing before Magistrate Kendra Kelly.
When given the chance to speak, Carey sought to explain his relationship with the child in question, saying she is the daughter of someone he knows.
He told the court the child’s mother had three children, whom he would sometimes watch and discipline while the mother was at work.
Carey then started to explain what happened on the day in question, however, he was stopped by the magistrate, who informed him that he would only be able to give evidence during trial.
As a result, the case was adjourned to May 2 for trial.
Bail was also deferred until Wednesday to allow the prosecutor to check whether the accused had any pending or outstanding matters.
