A MAN was placed on two months’ probation after assaulting his wife in their home last weekend.
Jovanil Charles, 43, appeared before Magistrate Kara Turnquest-Deveaux on charges of assaulting his wife on March 13.
The prosecution informed the court that on that day Charles had an argument with the complainant stemming from her questioning him about other women. This resulted in him pushing her out of the house and beating her about the body. Charles was then arrested for assault.
Before this incident, Charles had no prior antecedents.
A Creole interpreter translated for Charles in court.
Speaking on his behalf, she told the court that Charles said he pleaded guilty to the charges against him.
While Charles agreed with the prosecution’s recounting of the assault, he told the court through the interpreter that he only resorted to violence because he was under pressure from the complainant.
He explained that at the time of the incident he was on the phone with the mother of his child and that his wife took issue with that. He further said that it was only after his wife jumped on him when he asked the woman on the phone how his child was doing that he was aggressive with the complainant. He said his wife did not want him to talk to either of them.
Magistrate Turnquest- Deleveaux placed Charles on two months’ probation and told him that any further run-ins with the law would result in him spending two months behind bars.
Charles thanked the magistrate for her ruling and assured her that he would not do anything like this again.
