TWO women faced causing harm charges against each other in a Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
The charges resulted for fighting at their job.
Crystal Sweeting stood before Magistrate Algernon Allen, Jr, while Nadege Joseph went before Asst. Chief Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans, both on charges of causing harm to each other.
At 12am on May 19 at the Comfort Zone Bar on Wulff Road where both women are employed they got into a heated argument that became physical. As a result both women were arrested.
Sweeting pleaded guilty in court to the offence claiming that Joseph had punched her in the face first and that she only attacked Joseph afterwards with a knife in self-defence.
She also said that the whole cursing and fighting incident boiled down to poor communication between the two of them. As Sweeting said Joseph is only fluent in Creole and only speaks broken English.
After Sweeting gave her explanation of events, she apologised for wasting the court’s time with this matter.
Magistrate Allen then cautioned and discharged Sweeting for her part in the incident.
Meanwhile Joseph speaking through an interpreter pleaded not guilty to the charge before Magistrate Vogt-Evans.
Joseph while admitting to assaulting Sweeting also claimed that the other accused started the fight by hitting her first.
When inquiring of Joseph’s status the Magistrate was informed that she does have a work permit valid until 2023.
With no objections, Joseph was granted bail at $2,000 with one surety on condition she sign in at South Beach Police Station every Sunday by 7pm.
After being told not to interfere with Sweeting regarding this matter, Joseph was informed that failure to meet any of the court’s conditions would result in her bail being revoked.
Joseph’s trial is set for August 4.
