The debut for the Bahamas in a CONCACAF championship got off to an ominous start when faced against global powerhouse United States.
The US won in dominant fashion with a 10-0 victory over the Bahamas in their opener yesterday at the CONCACAF Under-17 Women's Championship in Guatemala.
Pooled with the US, Mexico and Trinidad & Tobago, the Bahamas is next expected to play against Mexico 6:30pm Saturday and Trinidad and Tobago 4pm Monday.
All of the games are expected to be shown live on www.concacaf.com.
The tournament serves as the final round of qualifying for the World Cup finals that is slated to be held in Azerbaijan in October. The Bahamas would have to be one of the top three finishers in Guatemala to move on.
Summer Green scored five goals for the US - four in the first half - to pace the American side.
The Bahamas' side, a developing team for the future, started a number of players 15 years old or younger, including 12-year-old midfielder Tate Cuffy.
Just a single shot on goal for the Bahamas came in the 68th minute when Kennadi Green was able to sprint down the left and get off an effort from inside the area.
The US scored their opening goal 38 seconds into the match and never looked back, looking every bit like the favourites of the championship.
In the 2010 Championships, the US outscored all opponents 38-0 but eventually fell to Canada on penalties in the semifinals. The result matched the second most lopsided result in the history of the CONCACAF U-17 finals, matching a 10-0 win by the United States over Costa Rica in 2010 but short of its 13-0 rout of the Cayman Islands two years ago.
