Sports Fishing: Team Bahamas wins Offshore World Championship

THE Lyford Cay Offshore Tournament team produced another historic performance for the Bahamas, winning the Offshore World Championship in Quepos, Costa Rica, last week.

The team, made up of captain Paul King, Kwiecinski Gutierrez, Jimmy Bernard, Keith Kelty and Geoffrety O’Connell, won the four-day competition after they came from behind on the final day of competition by 27 points to beat the team from Papua New Guinea, who led from day two.

The Bahamas overhauled Papua New Guinea with a most dramatic and unprecedented final day’s catch (and release) of 16 Billfish to their rival’s three.

The final standings had the Bahamas with 5,827. Papua New Guinea had 5,800 for second and taking third place was Guatemala and West Australia in a two-way tie with 4,300.

A total of 67 teams from all over the world competed.

The Bahamas gained entry to the World Championships by virtue of winning the annual Lyford Cay Offshore Tournament, the name by which the team is identified.

Paul, Jimmy Bernard, Kristian and Keith Kelty competed in the last two World Championships in Cabo, Mexico, and were runners-up on both occasions. The third time around turned out to be a charm for the crew.
