US sports scientist to help Bahamian swimmer

IN A sport where a place on the podium is determined by fractions of a second, every competitive swimmer wants to swim faster. Later this month, Bahamian swimmers will have another opportunity to improve their technique and learn new ways to train and race when US sport scientist Rod Havriluk will hold swim clinics at two Nassau locations.

Havriluk, who has worked with a number of Caribbean swim teams, most recently in August with the Abaco Swim Club, will work with swimmers from several Nassau age-group teams as well as area triathletes who are looking for a competitive edge.

This will be the fourth time Havriluk has offered a technique clinic in Nassau.

The age group clinic is scheduled for October 25 and 26 at Betty Kelly-Kenning Aquatic Centre and swimmers from any Bahamas federation team may participate. The freestyle technique clinic for triathletes will be offered on October 28 and 29 at the St John’s College pool.

In the last year Havriluk, president of the International Society of Swimming Coaching, has conducted swim clinics for athletes at all levels, including Olympians, in a number of other countries (Australia, Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Kingdom). He is scheduled to speak at the Gold Medal Coach Clinic in Qatar next month at the request of FINA, the international regulatory body for swimming.
