MALACHI McCoy and Lathaniel Bastian led their teams to key conference wins and Jonathan McFall returned to the floor to highlight play from Bahamians in NCAA Division II basketball.
McCoy finished with 12 points and seven rebounds in just 17 minutes off the bench in his Benedict Tigers’ 81-74 win over the Clark Atlanta University Panthers on Saturday in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
The Tigers had an early 16-0 run in the first half to build a big lead and took a 38-27 lead at the half.
The lead reached 16 points when McCoy hit a three-pointer to take a 59-43 lead and the Tigers maintained an advantage for the rest of the way. The Tigers improved to 14-4 overall and 10-1 in the SIAC. The Tigers look to extend their win streak tonight against Fort Valley State. McCoy is averaging 10.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.
Lathanial Bastian and the Angelo State Rams returned to the win column with a dominant performance against Eastern New Mexico, 93-62, in Lone Star Conference play.
Bastian finished with seven points and seven rebounds.
The Rams improved to 14-5 and 4-3 in the Lone Star Conference. Bastian is averaging 11.2 points and a team leading 8.3 rebounds per game.
The Rams continue their homestand Tuesday, February 1, against UT Permian Basin.
Jonathan McFall returned to the court for Slippery Rock but the team continues to be mired in a three-game losing streak in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Slippery Rock lost 92-83 to California University on Saturday.
The loss drops The Rock’s record to 10-6 overall and 6-4 in PSAC games.
McFall came off the bench to score 15 points, collected six rebounds, two steals and one block.
On the season McFall is averaging 15.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.
