A 41-year-old father admitted to child cruelty  for beating his son with a belt, claiming he was only disciplining the boy for bad behaviour at school.

Assistant Chief Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans arraigned the defendant, whose name is being withheld to protect the child’s identity.

Prosecutors said the man beat his ten-year-old son sometime between January 1 and 31, causing unnecessary suffering.

After pleading guilty, he said he had only used a belt to discipline the boy after a teacher reported that the child had been rude at school. He also said he had raised his son since infancy.

Magistrate Vogt-Evans deferred sentencing until he speaks with the child and his mother.

The defendant was released on his own recognisance until his return to court.
