A JUDGE called the absence of a police officer facing a manslaughter charge in the 2018 killing of Deangelo Evans “problematic” after he once again failed to appear in court.

Detective Corporal Donald Wright was scheduled to appear before Justice Fritz Charles, but only his co-accused, Inspector Akeem Wilson, was present as the case proceeded in the Supreme Court.

Justice Charles was informed by defence attorney K Melvin Munroe that Wright is expected to appear before Justice Gregory Hilton for arraignment on March 7. Justice Charles said a trial date for both officers will be set later that same day.

The case against the officers follows the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) reversing an earlier decision not to charge anyone in Evans’ death.

Evans, 20, was shot and killed in Mason’s Addition on May 27, 2018.

Inspector Wilson pleaded not guilty to the charge earlier this month, during which time Wright was also absent.

Evans’ parents were present for the latest court developments.
