Local Students set sail into the new school year with new resources and opportunities

As students across The Bahamas prepare to head back to school, hundreds are doing so with greater confidence thanks to a generous investment in educational resources tailored to their unique needs.

Schools in Abaco, Eleuthera, and Nassau have received a substantial boost this year from Disney Cruise Line, which provided $200,000 worth of laptops, books, school supplies, and classroom equipment designed to enhance learning and inspire curiosity.

In Abaco, the start of the school year was celebrated with the South Abaco Back to School Jamboree, an event that brought together students and community members for a day of fun, sports, and distribution of essential school supplies. The event aimed to energize young learners and set a positive tone for the year ahead.

Over in Eleuthera, Green Castle and Wemyss Bight Primary Schools will benefit from new laptops, supporting digital literacy and helping students explore learning in innovative ways.

Recently, crew members from a Disney cruise ship visiting Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, teamed up with students and community members at Wemyss Bight Primary School to revitalize the school’s library. They installed new computers, printers, and comfortable furniture, transforming the space into a vibrant learning hub. Inspirational quotes and colourful decorations now adorn the walls, creating an inviting environment for study and creativity.

Clara Williams, a leading community advocate, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the upgrades.

“For many years, we have worked very hard to secure a space for this library because knowledge is the key, and without knowledge we can’t go far. Our staff and volunteers have held on to our dream, and this support has helped us make that dream come true,” she said.

To ensure students remain comfortable during their visits, an air conditioning unit was also installed in the library, creating an ideal atmosphere for learning.

In Nassau, Woodcock Primary School students will start the year with new laptops and textbooks, easing the financial burden on families and equipping children with essential tools for success.

Principal Robertha Scott highlighted the importance of this assistance: “This support lifts a tremendous weight off many families who may otherwise struggle to prepare for the new school year.”

“As students head back to the classroom, we want them to feel prepared, inspired and excited to learn,” said Joey Gaskins, regional public affairs director for Disney Cruise Line. “For many years, we have shown our commitment to supporting local schools and youth programs and ensuring students have the tools and confidence they need to succeed.”
