WORLD VIEW: Caribbean states will not shut up or be shut out
THE rights of Caribbean states in the international community are once again being threatened. This time the spokesman is an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University, Benjamin N. Gedan, who wrote an Opinion piece published by the Wall Street Journal on September 25 entitled: “For Venezuela’s Sake, Dismantle the Organization of American States. Tiny Caribbean states have outsize power, and many are in thrall to the Caracas regime.”
INSIGHT: Racism disguised as nationalism
It is easy to find revolting the nativistic, white supremacist ideology that seems to be acceptable to American President Donald Trump. Especially since the violent, tragic clash this summer in Charlottesville, VA, between race-baiting ultra right marchers and their opponents from the liberal left, public opinion polling has revealed most Americans condemn Trump for his ambivalent response to expressions of racial hatred many felt were lodged securely in America’s past.
INSIGHT: We are losing the fight. People want to feel safe. Period.
THE agonizing cries from Kendera Woodside, mother of Eugene Woodside, may have been enough to raise all the hairs on your body. Tortuous screams rang out from the backyard of their home, as family gathered during a visit from the Prime Minister and an entourage including his wife and some prominent pastors from the community. As a nation, we sincerely sympathize with Mrs. Woodside, who said that she had just told her mother that she would not have to bury her children and that they would outlive her mere moments before her son was slain by a bullet unintended for him.
INSIGHT: Better safe than sorry
THE 2017 Hurricane season was projected to be an active one by many of the top meteorological minds. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association predicted this hurricane season would be an “above average” year with 11 to 17 named storms, five to nine hurricanes – two of which being major ones. However, no one would have anticipated that three quarters of the way through the season there would have been this much devastation and loss at the hands of Category, 3, 4 and 5 storms.
INSIGHT: Time to tear up the rule book on immigration
The Immigration Policy followed by successive governments has failed to produce the desired results. The domestic economy has not flourished as a result of strict control of the labour force. Undocumented migrants, primarily from northern Haiti, continue to arrive on Bahamian shores in significant numbers.
INSIGHT: Lessons learned from Irma
WHILE the Bahamas was largely spared the widespread disaster and damage that the now historic category five Hurricane Irma was capable of, people of the Southern Bahamas – namely Ragged Island and Acklins – are left with the heavy burden of putting their lives back together. This is an enormous task for these families – one they are surely facing with some trepidation.

INSIGHT: A People Far from God
THIS past week, the nation was overcome with widespread fear and anxiety of the potentially catastrophic landfall of Hurricane Irma. As we watched forecasts showing the storm increase in power in the days leading up to its first impact on the Leeward Islands, and the destruction it left in its wake afterwards on its way to Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Haiti, we prayed for a miracle to happen.

INSIGHT: The victim's tale
Domestic abuse, whether verbal or physical, exists everywhere. No home is off limits, whether from Lyford Cay to Old Fort Bay or our more grassroots ‘over the hill’ areas. It’s a subject we know exists but one we often chose to ignore, happy it’s not something which encroaches on our own lives. For the victims the abuse can be life changing, destroying everything. It is only by understanding their stories that we can begin to educate the abusers and begin to effect change.
