I truly think closing all businesses will have a major fallout. This was not thought through IMHO.
Repost: While I don't have a problem with the national curfew, I don't think businesses should close down. Tourism is our primary industry and we already will have a heavy economic hit from the lack of tourists. So people will be spending less already. Now employers are expected to keep on staff when they aren't making any money? This doesn't seem wise.

It also seems rushed. I think more feedback should have been received from the business sector to understand the long-term effects. If the unemployment rates raise astronomically, then so will crime. This can devastating effects for everyone. Additionally, the virus won't disappear on Mar/31, so I don't understand why businesses should close down until then. I think the curfew would have been sufficient, along with the order to prevent gatherings of 10 or more people.

We can have the best shutdown in the world and that still won't matter in ten days. Our economy is tied to tourists. If their country has the virus we will always get it again.Or is the Chamber saying we should close everything until the virus is gone in the US, in which case dont worry about reopening

Atlantis's Uncle Tom (Ed Fields) will no doubt soon be disclosing to Atlantis's employees just how much goodwill has been bought for themin their time of need by the many concessions granted by successive governments to owners of Atlantis since the early 1990s....totalling many many millions of dollars. It's sure to be a most telling moment.

Often persons are willing to put rules over others that they would balk at following themselves. It would be interesting to see how many parliamentarians are out an about after 9pm flashing their do you know who I am title. How many policemen, they officers who are not on shift will use their titles to move about?

That said noone really knows the right answer. We only have Italy and China as examples. Italy had disastrous results but it's possible China's story isn't over yet.

The best they can do is take an educated guess at it. I hope they have it right.

At next election think of who youd want, wielding their new dystopian powers and utilizing their knowledge and instincts, if they have any, to make educated guesses for you in times like these.... if there is a next election

I agree.. being able to pay online is very difficult. One should only need the account number to be able to pay, but they want you to call some jackazz who never answers, just to get started on this process. Meanwhile , one can do ecommerce around th World in as few as 2 clicks!!

Here is the beginning of the end. When BPL can't buy fuel in 30 days, what gov't gonna do? borrow more money from the IDB and put the Bahamas into junkbond status. Britian just got downgraded to AA-. it will happen here and then we will be hoe-ing water and totting wood just like our southern neighbors.

I am not surprised by this. On reading the article I checked and had not received my March bill. When trying to pay it, I discovered that BPL had changed the website and it is now impossible to pay the bill. Typical example of when it ain't broke, don't fix it. Previously it worked seamlessly and I never had a problem. Now goodness knows when it will be possible to pay

As tens of thousands of workers in the private sector are losing their jobs it is ironic that not a single government employee has either taken a pay cut, lost their job or are working at reduced hours.

I say its ironic because the government derives it revenue to meet its payroll by taxing Bahamian citizens and tourist. In any other business there would be some belt tightening as revenues decline.

We just don't the Minster of Health, Finance and the PM telling us how awful it is and how we must stay in our homes. We need hope, we need to see you sharing in our pain. How about taking a 30% pay cut at the top (Minister level) going down to 10% at the Manager level. Leave the salaries of those at the bottom alone.

....I must be dreaming.

We have an elitist set of past and current politicians who, along with their cronies, are sucking heavily on public treasury with all of their government appointments, etc. Time to cut out a lot of the fat that has been going their way for decades so that others who are becoming increasingly destitute can at least be fed and buy vitally needed medicines.
