Seemingly the new Port folks thought that by having a junkanoo scrap gang to welcome the cruise ship passengers, New Year’s would be a great promotional concept…video on-line is very interesting forget the Junkanoo watch the majority of the cruise passengers walk right past the group performing totally oblivious to them – totally disinterested.
Marketing Junkanoo? Does junkanoo attract visitors? Been debatable for years the hotels are full over Boxing Day and New Years…not because of the parades. Yes, you are slowly seeing visitors on the bleachers but there is an issue…Boxing Day usually sold out locally throw in 1,000 visitors where will the local junkanoo followers sit to view the parade?
Whilst on marketing…post Dorian when the world thought Nassau had been flattened Tourism was asleep and did not counter the media who had to come to Nassau to get to Abaco…why didn’t Tourism take the TV Network camera crews throughout Atlantis - Bah Mar - Albany - Sandals and a quick trip to Exuma and show The Bahamas was not down to the count we were open more than 85% of our Tourism infrastructure was open? Tourism might eventually have done something but the damage was done. Our US Washington based Ambassador should have been on the Network Morning Shows telling the US…As should have been our High Commissioner in Canada and London…That’s their job surely?

Its hard for Junkanoo to attract tourists. mainly as until the day of no-one knows whether it will occur or not, and tourists will probably not be able to stay an extra day or two until the rain/winds are gone. I went to the boxing day parade this year and all the tourists i saw did enjoy it, though what % of the people on the boats came off to watch i do not know.
