A POLICE corporal dodged a potential eight-year prison sentence yesterday after a judge fined him $15,000 as part of a plea deal he took for attempting to procure sex from a minor.

Senior Justice Cheryl Grant-Thompson also placed the man, Gregory Taylor, 37, on probation for a year.

The Tribune could not verify the officer’s employment status up to press time.

Taylor initially pleaded not guilty but changed his plea before the trial began last week.

Police alleged that he tried to solicit sex from the minor online between August 2023 and January 5, 2024.

A reported text exchange showed his attempts to make sexual advances towards her.

After owning up to the offence, Taylor apologised to the complainant and her mother, saying his actions resulted from poor judgment.

He was subsequently fined and ordered to be on good behaviour for a year.

He was warned that failure to comply would result in three years in prison.

He made the first payment yesterday and must pay $2,500 each month until June.

According to the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Act, people who attempt to procure unlawful sexual intercourse from those under 18 can face eight years in prison.
