TWO men were jailed yesterday after being accused in the fatal shooting of a young mother while she and her three-day-old child were inside a car on Finlayson Street last month.
Chief Magistrate Roberto Reckley arraigned 32-year-old Davan Brennen and 20-year-old Mario Stuart on charges of murder and abetment to murder.
Stuart also faced an additional charge of armed robbery.
Prosecutors allege that the defendants shot and killed 23-year-old Philierica Sands as she sat inside her pink Honda Fit on January 26. Her infant child was in the car at the time of the shooting.
That day, Stuart allegedly robbed Caroline Newton at gunpoint at a Rubis Service Station on Mackey and Madeira Streets. He is accused of stealing a 2013 Nissan Cube, a Nokia C23 cellphone, and $75 in cash.
The accused were not required to enter a plea. They were informed that their cases would proceed to the Supreme Court through a voluntary bill of indictment (VBI).
Ryszard Humes, Stuart’s attorney, stated that he was not present for his client’s police interview and claimed that the defendant was forced to participate without legal counsel.
The two men were remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services until their VBIs are served on May 8.
Alphonso Lewis represented Brennen.
Inspector Deon Barr served as the prosecutor.
