NATIONAL champion Jalen Cadet, a last minute addition to Team Bahamas, watched as a medal slowly slipped from his grasp in the men's long jump at the Central American and Caribbean Games.

Cadet, one of three Bahamians in action yesterday at the Felix Sanchez Olympic Stadium in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, was dropped from third to sixth place in the final three rounds.

In other events contested by Team Bahamas, Denisha Cartwright advanced to the women's 100 metres hurdles final, while Wendell Miller ran out of a spot in the men's 400m.

Men’s long jump

Cadet, who opened the competition with a leap of 23-feet, 2 3/4-inches or 7.08 metres, was sitting in third place behind Cuba's Jorge Hodelin and Venezuela's Eubrig Maza after he cleared his best leap of 24-7 3/4 (7.51m) in the second round.

But in the third, both Colombia's Arnovis Dalmero and Jamaica's Nikaoli Williams knocked him down to fifth. Cadet then scratched his attempt and repeated the same in the fourth. 

In the fifth, Cadet was dropped to sixth, but he only cleared 23-11 (7.29m) on his attempt. He closed out the competition with 24-3 3/4 (7.41m).

Hodelin took the gold with (8.23m), Maza got the silver with (7.85m) and Dalmero got the bronze with 25-8 (7.82m).

Women's 100m hurdles

Cartwright led through the first four flights of hurdles before she was caught and passed by Cuba's Greisys Roble. While the taller Roble surged ahead for the win in 12.94, Cartwright - the shortest competitor - held on for second place in 13.26. 

Roble had the second fastest time in the two heats combined with Cartwright in fourth. Colombia's Maria Murillo, winner of heat one, had the fastest qualifying time of 12.83. Puerto Rico's Paola Vazquez, second in the heat, had the third fastest time of 13.24.

The final is set for today. 

The Bahamas didn't have any entries in the men's 110m hurdles.

Men's 400m

Miller, the only Bahamian entered in the field, ran in the first of three heats but faded down the stretch with a slight limp in sixth place in a time of 47.27. That placed him 15th overall in a field of 18 competitors. 

The Bahamas was not entered in the women's 400m.

Anai Powell, the lone Bahamian competing in the fistic ring, lost 50-0 in three rounds in the men's 65 kilogram class to Juliam Ortiz of Puerto Rico.

In the jumping second round competition, Anna Camille Vlasov fell short of getting into the top 10 yesterday. Up to press time last night, she was sitting in the top 15. She followed the performance with her 13th place on the first day of competition on Monday.

Dinghy Final

The team of Mary Nash and Patrick Tomlinson completed races seven and eight with second and fifth places respectively, the latter their worst in the series that they eliminated.

They are still in contention for a medal in third place with 23 points with two races today and the final two on Thursday.

Regional 2 Person

Mixed Dinghy

The team of Nash Cartwright and Lori Lowe are sitting in fifth place with 35 points after they got fourth and third in races seven and eight yesterday. They will race two more races today and then their final two races will be staged on Thursday.

1 Person Men's Dinghy

After a rest period on Monday, Joshua Higgins returned to competition yesterday and is now in fourth place with 42 points after he got third, fourth and fifth in his three races. His final two races will take place today.

1 Person Wom Dinghy

Eliza Denning, back in action yesterday after a rest day Monday, is now in fifth place with 32 points. She was fourth, fifth and third in her three races. Her final two races are set for today.
