A HAITIAN woman accused of causing a fatal traffic accident near Cowpen Road last month was remanded to prison yesterday.
Prosecutors allege that Maudeline Eugene, 40, was driving a white van dangerously south along Damian’s Way when she struck pedestrian Eumines Baptist, 52, at about 7am on July 27.
Baptist was taken to hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Eugene allegedly fled the scene but turned herself in at Carmichael Road Police Station at 12.30pm later that day.
She was not required to enter a plea to vehicular manslaughter when she appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Ancella Evans.
With the assistance of a Creole interpreter, Eugene was informed that the case would proceed to the Supreme Court through a voluntary bill of indictment.
She was remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.
Eugene is expected to return to court on August 10, when prosecutors will confirm whether she has any other matters pending before the court.
Inspector Deon Barr prosecuted the case.
Gary Russell held brief for Devard Francis, who represented Eugene.
