A MAN was acquitted of attempting to murder a police officer at LPIA in 2021 but was convicted of robbing the female Bahamasair employee the officer was escorting when he was shot.
Garnett Newbold, 59, was found guilty of armed robbery by a 6-3 jury verdict before Justice Neil Braithwaite.
He was acquitted of attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life by 8-1 verdicts.
Despite the armed robbery conviction, Newbold was also unanimously acquitted of conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
He sat stoically in the prisoner’s dock as the verdicts were read after more than an hour of deliberations.
Newbold and his accomplices robbed Karen Bain of a deposit bag containing $2,654 belonging to Bahamasair as she attempted to place it in a drop box at LPIA’s domestic terminal on October 2, 2021.
Corporal 1964 William Smith was shot while escorting Ms Bain to the drop box near the RBC ATM.
Corporal Smith testified that he continues to suffer pain from his gunshot injuries and remains unable to bend his left thumb.
Newbold’s attorney, Wendawn Miller-Frazier, requested a probation report.
Newbold is expected to return to court for sentencing on October 15.
Destiny Morley and G’ann Hepburn prosecuted the case.
